GHIAIA NERA NERELLO MASCALESE

Producer
The large Regaleali estate, high in the central Sicilian hills, has been in the hands of the noble Tasca family since 1830. Ever since, the property has been run according to the best principles of the agricultural aristocracy: with one eye firmly on quality, and the other on experimentation. Tasca’s large range is the product of the family’s most successful innovations, including short pruning for lower yields, the championing of local Inzolia and Nero d’Avola vines, the introduction of French varieties, and the use of barrique and temperature control. More recently, the family have extended their holdings to other areas of Sicily, from Etna to the Aeolian Islands, with striking success.
Vineyard
The vineyard is situated on the northern slopes of Mount Etna near Catania. It consists of terraced volcanic sediment 600 meters above sea level, and young vines are used to produce this particular wine. The grapes were harvested in the first third of October.
Winery
The wine underwent traditional fermentation at 25-30oC, with a six-day maceration. It then spent twelve months in large oak casks before bottling.
Taste
A delightful, early-drinking example of Etna’s great red grape variety, Nerello Mascalese, this clear ruby-coloured wine offers aromas of red fruit, flowers and leather. The palate is fluid and silky, with an appetising mineral quality.
